Macclesfield

About Macclesfield

Macclesfield is a busy historic market town on the banks of the River Bollin in east Cheshire, located between the Cheshire Plain and the Peak District and dates back as far as the 13th century.

It was once one of the world’s largest producers of finished silk, being the nation’s silk powerhouse earning its nickname of ‘The Silk Town’. It is evident as you walk around what a profound effect the Silk industry has had in shaping the town with notable old weavers’ cottages and mills which once dominated Macclesfield’s landscape.

The Town is perfectly situated for commuters being equipped with a main train line that provides convenient access to Manchester. London can be directly reached within less than two hours. Road links for the M6, M56 and the M60 are also easily accessible. Manchester Airport is also a short drive away and offers flights throughout Europe and beyond.

Macclesfield is also a thriving commercial centre with several big employers such as Astra Zeneca and offers some of the best schools in the area. These include the private Kings school which has recently been re-sited in July 2020 to a new £60 million pound campus offering state of the art facilities for boys and girls aged 3-18.

Other fantastic local schools include The Fallibroome Academy, Macclesfield Academy, All Hallows Catholic College and Tytherington High School. There is also an abundance of primary schools throughout Macclesfield offering outstanding education.

Nearby Macclesfield Forest, whilst significantly smaller than its medieval days, is still a fantastic attraction for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy walking and biking and is only 3 miles South East of Macclesfield. Climbers will be more than satisfied with the local attractions, with nearby Tegg’s Nose and Shutlingsloe, the third highest peak in the Peak District, providing ample opportunities for walkers. Nearby Bollington is renowned for its many high-quality Public Houses and White Nancy, a hilltop monument to the Napoleonic Battle of Waterloo.

There are also several magnificent golf courses nearby including Tytherington Golf Club, Shrigley Hall, Prestbury Golf Club and Macclesfield Golf Club, the latter being the home club of Jamie Donaldson who won his maiden European Tour title in 2012 at The Irish Open at Royal Portrush, finishing 4 strokes ahead of three other players.

Three of these clubs also offer leisure and fitness facilities. There is also a large range of local shops and restaurants and a pedestrianised town centre. Here you will also find a bustling monthly market known as ‘the treacle market’ in Macclesfield’s Marketplace with 160 plus stalls of unique crafts, exceptional food & drink, and vintage finds.
